Mold Selection – Merit Medical selects core metal materials that are made in America from the highest quality graded steel. Molds which are made from the highest quality metals will provide superior melting temperatures and flow rates for the resin or plastic being used. Molds of this quality can be re-tooled to adjust for changes within the part’s dimensional requirements, much like the changes occurring with the ISO 80369-7 standard.
Mold Design & Tooling – Tooling represents the most critical and costly area when trying to achieve tighter tolerances and superior performance. This process requires an expert molder who understands how the placement of gates, cooling lines, and vents will affect the flow rate of the resin or plastic. They must also understand how the mold will interface with the molding press. This knowledge helps the molder to make fine-tuned adjustments to the mold and eliminate production flaws in the finished goods.
Expertise – Merit incorporated an in-house tooling mold shop within its facility and employs expert mold-makers who routinely inspect over 60 injection mold presses and various molds. Having access to an in-house mold shop allows for our team of experts to quickly break down a mold to inspect, repair or service. Merit’s raw resin hoppers and dryers are housed separately from the production floor and employs an automated Motan vacuum system to deliver the plastic resin from the dryers to the molding presses.
